At Jenner Law, we believe in honoring students whose perseverance, courage, and commitment to service embody the true meaning of “making a difference.” For 2025, we are proud to announce Keyara Green, a student at Houston Community College pursuing an Associate’s degree in American Sign Language with a 3.85 GPA, as our undergraduate scholarship recipient.
Keyara’s journey has been defined by resilience in the face of profound personal tragedy. In 2017, her husband was killed while sleeping beside their two youngest children. The trauma left her young son unable to speak for 18 months. With extraordinary patience and love, Keyara guided him through recovery using simultaneous speech and sign language, eventually helping him regain his voice. Today, he thrives with clarity and confidence.

Her path to higher education has been marked by further challenges. While beginning her ASL studies, she supported her grandmother through a rare blood disorder and devastatingly lost her just before finals. Not long after, she endured the loss of her paternal grandmother as well. Despite grief and struggles with suicidal ideation, Keyara’s faith, family, and determination carried her forward. She finished her semester with straight A’s, and continued to immerse herself in the Deaf community.
Keyara’s vision for the future is as ambitious as it is inspiring. She plans to become an interpreter for deaf children in the Harris County school system, then pursue a Bachelor’s in Deaf Studies, and ultimately earn a PhD in Psychology. Her long-term goal is to expand access to mental health professionals skilled in ASL and to prove that sign language can be a vital therapeutic tool for trauma-induced mutism. She also dreams of becoming a leading ASL interpreter for professional public speakers, ensuring accessibility and inclusion in every space.
